While we stared down the shaft of a nuke at the commies during the Cold War, countires such as Brazil learned to develop high tech bee fighting techniques to combat the bellicose insects.

While one may scoff at the idea of needing any sort of legislation to restrict something as out of control as flamethrowers, there are apparently multitudes of step by step instructions on the interwebs explaining how to build a flamethrower out of a super soaker. (Final step = self-immolation?)

To me, this sounds like the fantasy of urban legend.  Oh, how I was wrong.

Wow.

Supposedly, the key to avoiding conflaguration is finding a water gun that doesn’t leak.  Good luck there.

If Obama’s recently approved nomination for Attorney General – Eric H. Holder Jr. – tackles his new role as the country’s chief officer of the law with the restrictive angle the NRA believes he will.

The NRA said last year “Obama would be the most anti-gun president in American history.”

While that remains to be seen, I think its time for me to scrounge up some bhutane and a pump-action water gun.

In honor of his inauguration last week, nowpublic posted a list of the top mashups leading up to the moment.

Both the infamous ‘Obama Girl’ (produced by barelypolitical) and another cliche, but clever use of Rick Astly’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ (of which I have nightmares about, see my Rick Rollin’ post) made the list.

I’m shocked, however, not to see the ‘Wassup 2008‘ vid on here, as it is closing in on 6 million hits on youtube.  Most likely, it fell off because it doesn’t actually include Barack Obama, but I can’t imagine any Obama mashup list without it.  (For those of you who don’t remember the original Budweiser ad, please reexamine your grip on American pop culture of the last decade and then proceed to watch the original.)

The video, produced by 60frames, captures the innanity of a meme that spread through schools and offices faster than the sexually liberated girl from your freshman dorm who just discovered alchohal.  It also got old just as fast.

Same dudes as the original?

I find this spoof brillant because it combines the asinine nature of the original, embedded with serious commentary about the direction many Americans felt the country was moving.

AND as a bonus, it even reunites the original cast according to boingboing.

While I’m not totally sure about the authenticity of the cast, the parody does a great job mimicking the Bud ad, but still provides something new.

While the ‘Yes we can‘ video isn’t exactly humor, it proves the read/write culture extends beyond the scope of some nerd’s basement.  Created by will.i.am, Black Eyed Peas frontman, and Bob Dylan’s son, filmmaker Jesse Dylan, the video includes cameos from a host of celebrities, actors, and musicans from Scarlett Johansson to Kareem Abdul Jabaar.  It juxtaposes these famous faces with Obama’s speech following the results of the New Hampshire primary.

Whether you support Obama or not, it’s hard to deny deny the power of a piece earning 16 million youtube hits.

Looks very scientific

This may seem like an outpouring of support or the centerpiece of intense conversation, but scanning the 164 comments there is little dialogue over the issue.

Who needs sound fiscal policy when you get $700 billion for passing go?

With around 10 million subscribers, World of Warcraft would be the 8th largest state in the US – right between Michigan and Georgia.  But would it be a red or blue state, if it had voted on Nov 4th?

A friend dubbed it the McCain shuffle.  Or maybe the McShuffle.  I can see it now: A new meal from McDonalds that includes a tax credit to pay for your obesity related medical costs from eating at the archs.

When news hits the web, it goes viral.  Humor is one of most effective critiques of society and the internet is the perfect platform to make a statement without access to a traditional medium.

This blog picks up items that are newsworthy, but have also been transformed by the web.

Reason for concern?

These are not the ‘smoke-filled rooms’ of LBJ’s legend.

Its not entirely fair to blame the administration for a problem that been lurking since the mid-90s.  Nor for the slow legislation on the bailout.

That being said, its still funny.

Fey is almost more Palin than Sarah

Searching for Tina Fey’s impersonation of the Alaskan Governor, mostly what you will find is more rick rollin…

Despite my belief that rick rolling is actually the most valid sign of the Apocalypse yet, there are real videos of both Palin’s and Fey’s versions on the net.  I found this post consolidating the real Katie Couric interviews with the SNL ones.

The more I watch the SNL version, the more my mental image of Palin becomes Tina Fey, not Sarah Palin.
